More about St Gaudens Gold Coin

The St Gaudens gold coin is subcategory of the double eagle gold coin that was minted in the United States between 1907 and 1933 which has a face value of twenty dollars. It is made from ninety percent gold and ten percent copper. Both sides were designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens which is where its name comes from. On the obverse side, Lady Liberty is featured holding onto a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The reverse side features the bald eagle while in flight with the motto placed underneath it.

The coins that were minted in 1907 and 1908 do not have the motto, 'In God We Trust', as it was not part of the design but in 1908 Congress passed a bill that stated it was required so the design was recreated with the motto included.

The last coins that were made from 1933 have quite a history as they were supposed to have been melted. There were only around twenty five that were said to have been left, one being in the collection of Egyptian royalty. It eventually disappeared and reappeared later on. It is most known for having been sold in a 2002 auction for over 7.5 million dollars which makes it the most valuable coin in the world.
